Some “Extra” facts about autism

During your April visit with our speech language pathologists, you may have received something a little “Extra” … a pack of gum and a sheet with a few facts to honor Autism Awareness Month.

Just in case you haven’t, here’s a few facts we’re sharing in April.

  1. Autism now affects 1 in 68 children, according to the CDC.
  • 1 in 42 boys
  • 1 in 189 girls
  1. Autism varies greatly from person to person; no two people with autism are the same.
  2. Common characteristics of autism include:
  • Persistent deficits in social communication and interaction.
  • Restricted or repetitive behaviors.
  • Hyper- or hypo-reactivity to sensory input.
  1. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder, yet is the most underfunded.
  2. Children with autism DO progress, so early intervention is key.
