We wanted to share this beautiful message from Amber H. Her son, Amden, is a child with Down syndrome.

Down syndrome is not a scary thing or bad. Children with Down syndrome are just like every other child. They want to be independent. They are so determined and can accomplish anything they set their minds to. It may take a little more time and work, but they will get there.

These kids are being mainstreamed in school, going to college, working jobs, even getting their driver’s license. How cool is that. And because of all the work it took them to get there you’re going to be so amazed and proud when your child accomplishes that one little simple task, because for your family it huge. It’s a big milestone.

Amden is 8 and this past year has been an amazing year for him. He is starting to actually speak without having to be prompted. He just walks up and says “Hi.” This is huge for us because he has been nonverbal for so long.

He also is learning how to swim. He has worked so hard in aquatics for over two years, and for the first time two weeks ago he jumped under and started swimming across the pool. He was more proud of himself then I had time to be. I managed to get a video and he watches it every day. He loves seeing himself swim.

My point is there is so much more these kids can do with support, love, and a little extra work. They can and will have a normal life just like any other child. They are individuals, not a diagnosis.

Amber H wrote this to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. We’re sharing it a bit after that, because we’re proud of Amden and think children with Down syndrome should be celebrated every day!
